GET UNSTUCK: How to get your spark back and unleash your next great idea
A ritual for clearing stagnant energy, the anatomy of an idea, and how to get your creative juices flowing again.
Ah yes, the creative rut! We know, we don’t love it. Here you will find a guide to getting unstuck while honoring the natural place that creative ruts have in our life.
Overview: Part 1 features a less-than-5-minute ritual to get your spark back including one of my go-to breathwork practices for shifting energy and clearing stagnation from the mind and body. I’ve also plugged some AMAZING beats that always work to get my clients and students into an epically inspired mood.
In Part 2, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how energy moves through your body according to Human Design, which unveils the anatomy of an idea and how to turn inspiration into form!
The irony of this guide is that I came up with the idea after I took a nap, felt a little groggy and out of it, and immediately took charge by moving my body, breathing, and then BOOM the idea to turn this ritual and information into a guide for YOU came through! So yes, it works!!
Lastly, here’s a video of me doing this ritual, for reference.
PART 1: Move, shake, breathe, and vibrate new energy into your mind-body-soul in less than 5 minutes
Cultivate acceptance for this moment. It is OKAYYYY. You are human, and that means you are like nature. You can’t expect yourself to be in bloom all the time. Take a deep breath and… let it go.
Once you are ready, it’s time to SHIFT your energy through somatic movement and breath. Science has shown that motivation follows action — meaning you gotta get moving before you expect a spark to come back. We can’t sit on the couch waiting for inspiration to suddenly hit (there’s a Human Design exception to this, but that’s for another time).
Move your body through somatic shaking: This is the best way to immediately move stagnant energy stuck in the body, get out of your mind, and throw energy back into your Being.
Reference this video for what somatic shaking looks like — literally just jump up and down and shake your limbs like a crazy person!!
Practice Kapalabhati (breath of fire) to clear any left over stagnant energy + get your mind clear. Avoid this if on your moon cycle or pregnant.
Take one to three cleansing breaths in through the nose, out the mouth.
Seal the lips, inhale 3/4 of the way full, and begin exhaling sharply through the nose while pumping your belly button to your spine and inhaling effortlessly. It’s like panting but through your nose! Make sure you are pumping the naval in and out, this is key. Do not breathe only in and out of the chest.
Do this for a count of 30, release all the air, hold for a few moments, and repeat up to 3 times.
Stay in this meditative state and tap on your third eye to reawaken your vision and invite ideas into your crown (see the Human Design bodygraph section for more).
No matter how vivid or blurry your vision for yourself is, visualizing it brings you back into its energy. Do this with compassion. If feelings of being far from it or if the vision triggers you, come back to your breath and remember that you wouldn’t be able to visualize it if it wasn’t yours!!
Listen to a high vibe playlist while sitting in meditation — use headphones for best experience. This practice is incredible for subtly raising your vibration and using the music to invite new visuals and feelings of possibility into your mind and body.
Try THIS playlist and some of the following songs. When you listen, focus on the beats, the energy, and let it soak innnnn.
Marea / Eyes / Innerbloom / Love Tonight
Bonus: if you can’t help but get up and dance, do it!!
This entire practice can take less than 5 minutes if it needs to! You will be surprised how quickly this gets you into a higher state of Being and opens your crown to receive ideas, clarity, and inspiration. You can also adapt it as needed, but try to include some element of movement and music in whatever you do… That combo is KILLAA!!!
PART 2: A brief explanation of how energy moves through your body as depicted by the Human Design Bodygraph
If you’ve looked at a Human Design Bodygraph, you’ll notice a bunch of shapes and channels connecting them. (See image 1.) These shapes and channels represent the 9 energy centers of the body and the gates connecting them — it’s basically a circuit board of how energy moves through the body and soul!
A few things to point out:
All energy centers are connected to the Throat either directly or through another center. This is because the throat is the center that governs manifestation and is the first place we turn thought/energy into FORM.
Your body has 2 pressure centers, one of which is the Crown. When energy comes through these centers, it creates literal pressure to get things moving. Because the Crown governs inspiration, it might start to make sense why getting a dose of inspiration gets you moving! That’s because inspiration creates a pressure to think and do and get answers. (See image 2).
Inspiration comes through the Crown, moves to the mind where it turns into a concept or answer, and then keeps moving through to the throat where it can manifest into form through speaking or initiating action/doing. (See image 3).
When you are in a rut, creatively or otherwise, it’s helpful to think of your body and soul as this circuit board. A rut or block is just energy getting stuck somewhere in the process or a lack of energy overall. If there’s no juice flowing, the body feels weird and unaligned, hence the feeling of stuckness.
Ok, so how do I get my spark back knowing this?
As I explained in this video, there are 2 types of creative ruts. The first is a sacred rut and a time to be patient, contemplate, and accept the lull that you’re in. The second is a self-imposed rut (usually unconscious) that can be smoothed out by facilitating the flow of energy in your body (ie, the flow of an idea — see image 3 again).
Remember how the Crown governs inspiration? If you get a hit of inspiration, even if it’s tiny, and you immediately doubt it or question it while processing it in your Mind (Ajna center), that potential for an idea immediately loses some spark. What we want is for the inspiration to make it just a liiiittle further down the pipeline.
The goal is to make the space between inspiration and form short and fast. Why? Because this gets energy moving and that creates momentum and good pressure.
Your ideas don’t need to be “good,” they just need to get going. If your bar for ideas is too high, you’re stopping yourself before you even start. Let your actions be messy, chaotic, and imperfect. When you let yourself make “bad stuff",” you will unlock your genius and get the spark back for making DOPE STUFF. And remember that what you think is “bad” is probably just you being hard on yourself.
Think back to the Bodygraph — in order for inspiration and ideas to get going, they just need to take form, even if that’s by being written down or said out loud to acknowledge them. Your throat is the first place energy turns into form and this is why speaking out your desires, ideas, questions, and more literally gets things going.
In summary, to get out of a rut:
Think of yourself as an energetic circuit board that functions best when energy is moving around (image 3).
Challenge yourself to not stop the flow of ideation by overthinking it, and instead let it get past the mind and into the body where it starts to take form.
The second you get a hit of inspiration, do something to materialize it: write it down in your notes, scribble it onto paper, send a voice note to a friend, take to yourself about it!! Just get it out!!
Keep letting energy move. That is how a block is unkinked!
Remember, you are energy. Literally, 90%+ of you is energy, not solid matter. That means the key to alignment and shifting into who and what you desire is most likely a question of energetics and facilitating the flow of your energetic Self.
And lastly, creative ruts are totally normal and part of the Human process. Give them space. Sometimes our soul is trying to create the conditions to receive, and in order to do that, we have to slow down and go inward.
You got this!!
Let me know how this landed and if it helped you! I’d love to hear from you.
Sending love and creative vibes,
Bella
