Creatives are made to break the rules.
A musing on the fire within and the desire to let. it. out.
Write from your soul, not the persona who of you think you are. Write from the heart, without qualms of what it will cause for you or what others will think.
I often find myself in a conflicting position — totally imposed by the dance between my ego and soul, and a sprinkle of “industry best practices” as dictated by ???
I’m a Creative. A writer. A producer. A mentor. A spiritual teacher. I run a business and am in service to others. There is a need to strategize and sell and make it all work.
And then there is the most important need above all else:
To give my humanness a medium to express itself through. No— to give divine consciousness room to express itself through me. I, as the medium. Artists are messy people. They don’t always make their beds and they get random strokes of inspiration at 2 am that MUST be acted upon. They intentionally listen to the voice in their head whereas others are taught to ignore such instincts.
The artist in me doesn’t like rules or strategy or being told what to do. It doesn’t like that in order to sell a program or mentor, I am supposed to present myself as polished and evolved. I will tell you right now — every coach, mentor, and teacher you’ve worked with or learned from is dealing with some gnarly shit in the background. Self doubt, limiting beliefs, self-sabotage, fear. And yes, many of them have sorted it out and are embodied as fuck. There is no doubt and I do not diminish or deny the existence of very stellar humans in service to others.
BUT, if you are human, you are still sorting it out. You are in a constant ebb and flow between remembering and forgetting who you are. Some of us just feel the urge to vocalize it more than others. (Or maybe some of us are facing heavier karmic lessons and I’m just a little jaded lol!)
And herein lies my predicament. Does my burning desire to freely express and break the rules and not follow the guidelines go against my equal burning desire to lead and teach and guide? When I put it in writing, it’s easy to think no, of course not. Do it your way!!
The triangle of choice from college comes to mind: social life, good grades, good sleep. They told you to pick 2 because all 3 were impossible. The law of infinite possibility would tell you it is all possible.
And honestly, I completely AGREE. It is a matter of perception and metric shifting. When you are trying to live a path by the prescriptions of those who have come before you, it is nearly impossible to “do it all.” To pick all 3 on the triangle of choice.
But if you realize that your consciousness is here to experience life in an individuated way, then you remember that it’s not about strategy or making sense or following “best practices” (God I hate those!!!).
It’s about forging your own path. It’s about saying “fuck you” to the way you’re supposed to do it. Reject it. Ignore the rules. Like Casey Neistat would say “do what you can’t.” In the short term, it probably won’t work yet. But in the long term… That is where things could get interesting.
I want to share an example of someone who I admire deeply that seems to be mastering this craft of imperfection and forging her own damn way. There is an incredible artist, singer, poet, songwriter, and women’s mentor named Emma Zeck. She is fire in human form. She breaks every rule, the ones you didn’t even know existed. She is the medium for divine energy to flow through. She swears and shows up as her full, uninhibited Self. She’s a rockstar and a mentor. She holds programs AND she does not hold her tongue back. And from an outside perspective, this is actually what makes it all work. Her unabashed expression of self is the strategy.
I look at an artist like her and I think… Yes. God created individuals so they may iterate and individuate. We are not here to follow moulds. We are here to break them, again and again and again.
In my life I know I will do many great things. I know I am destined for the stage, for the spotlight, for a book shelf, for motherhood, for adventure, for wildness, and for so much more.
I am determined to make it all work. I am determined to let my chaotic artistry shine and have it bolster my work as a teacher and mentor. I am determined to shock and shake up while being kind and heart-led.
Like you, fellow creative, I am determined to see my authentic expression pay off in more ways than just material. I am driven by the feeling of raw, unfiltered expression of my life force.
There is a sticky note on my computer sitting 3 inches down from this line I am writing, it says:
Your vision comes alive when you come alive. Your life force is your method. Your way.
Let your aliveness lead the way. Let your mess be the story. Let your imperfection build your vision instead of waiting for a “better you” to show up and make it happen.
You are the vision. You have what it takes to build it now.
You are meant to do things in an non-replicable way. There is no one quite like you. There is no iteration of consciousness that can do, feel, and see things the way you do. And if you haven’t noticed, the collective is practically begging for us to shake things up. For us to break what has gone stale and dull.
If you have a fire within you that wants to express and scream and strip and stop giving a fuck about how it’s supposed to be done — you are meant to feel this. You are meant to dig deeper and embrace the quirks that make you YOU.
You were created by a life force that wants to experience life uniquely through you. It wants to taste and feel and see through your senses and essence.
My request for all artists, visionaries and creatives: do not lot homogeneity drive you. Do not let it sink you. Do not let your fire be watered down.
Trust in your desires, your instincts, you emotions as a GPS. Let it take the wheel.
You are the vision. The strategy is you.
